Kinzoo needed scalable tools to ensure child safety online. ActiveFence helped automate moderation, reducing risks and improving response times.
Since its founding in 2018, Kinzoo has expanded its user base from Canada and the US into the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. They wanted to make sure the app would continue to live up to the highest-possible safety standards while adjusting to regional and cultural nuances. Detecting harmful behaviors like inappropriate content, hate speech, and sexual material is critical for child safety online, and Kinzoo wanted easy-to-use, streamlined filters that could scale with them as they continued to grow.
“We didn’t have an easy way to understand the behaviors of users in the app,” says Joyce Gagliano, COO at Kinzoo. “We had a simple keyword filter in place, but nothing more advanced than that.”
Kinzoo needed a solution that not only detected potential risks, but would also help them act quickly to protect their users. They sought a partner who could provide advanced tools that go beyond simple filters to ensure the platform remained a healthy and safe environment where any harmful content would quickly be detected and removed.
“Our primary focus has always been the safety of children on our platform,” Joyce added. “Our goal is to ensure that the platform is healthy and safe, but we didn’t have the tools to do this effectively.”
To address these challenges, Kinzoo partnered with ActiveFence. Using ActiveFence's automated detection capabilities and moderation management tools allowed the company to scale its moderation capabilities and address potential risks in real-time.
"The setup with ActiveFence was very smooth," said Joyce. "The focus was to make it as easy as possible, and they really achieved that."
One of the major benefits of ActiveFence’s platform was the ease of use. Using ActiveFence’s customizable moderation dashboards, Kinzoo’s team was able to prioritize the review of high-risk content, such as hate speech or sexually explicit material, to ensure that this dangerous content is quickly removed.
“ActiveFence’s dashboard became our daily tool for reviewing cases, starting with the highest-priority ones like sexual content or hate speech,” Joyce explained
The team also used user-level grouping to quickly review and act on multiple items at once, significantly reducing the time moderators spent reviewing content, while increasing the number of harmful items removed.
“The platform is incredibly intuitive, and the bulk action feature has saved us hours of manual work,” Joyce noted. “Before, we had to go case by case. Now, with ActiveFence, I can select everything and confirm actions in one go. This makes our job so much easier,” Joyce explained.
ActiveFence’s technology has also been instrumental in helping Kinzoo stay ahead of potential threats, such as anticipating how users might bypass existing protection, through its automated content detection.
“Every day, kids find new ways to use banned words, like using emojis to say things we block. ActiveFence helps us stay proactive by identifying these behaviors. The ability to anticipate and block new ways users try to circumvent our filters has been incredibly valuable,” Joyce explained.
Since launching with ActiveFence, Kinzoo has seen substantial improvements in the way they manage content moderation. Harmful content is identified and removed faster, and their team has become more efficient at handling high-priority cases.
This proactive approach has also informed Kinzoo’s product development. Every new feature is designed with safety at its core, ensuring that moderation is built into the app’s functionality from the start.
“We saw a major improvement in efficiency once we moved to ActiveFence. The platform is rich with features and customizable to how we work, which allows us to prioritize cases and take action quickly,” Joyce noted.
As Kinzoo continues to grow, they are already preparing to scale by working with ActiveFence to introduce more automation into their operations.
"We were pleasantly surprised to find, after partnering with ActiveFence, that the overall behavior of our users wasn’t as bad as we had feared. But as we grow, automation will become key. We’re working with ActiveFence to optimize our processes even further," Joyce explained.
